Chitosan-based
Water Purifier

We have designed and integrated a chitosan-based water purification system that combines efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. By designing a water purification system optimised for Chitosan’s chemical characteristics, our system vastly enhances coagulation efficiency and the removal of contamination, all the while ensuring industrial factors such as application range, scalability, and sustainability.

Chitosan Application

Coagulation/Flocculation with Chitosan

The purification process begins in the coagulation compartment, where chitosan hydrogel beads are added. Rapid mixing at 200 RPM for 45 seconds aggregates impurities, followed by slow mixing at 50 RPM to form robust flocs. This achieves 97% turbidity removal at a 1.5g/L dosage, surpassing PAC or PFS, which require over three times the dosage for only 93% efficiency. A built-in water composition test ensures optimal pH (5.3–6) for peak chitosan performance.

ChitoClear integrates coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation into a single compartment, using a height difference mechanism to accelerate settling. Destabilized particles sink quickly and are flushed out via a sludge drain valve, minimizing production costs and maximizing water output.

Sedimentation with
Chitosan

Chitosan’s ability to form flocs (charge neutralisation property) and broad-spectrum removal (including contaminants like pathogens and colloidal suspensions) allows for larger floc formation, increasing settling efficiency. This proves suitability for industrial applications and feasibility for an abundance of clean water supply in underserved areas. Furthermore, with chitosan, you will achieve faster settling times, filter solids off more easily, and remove a variety of contaminants, including fine sediment particles and heavy metals.

Filtration with
Chitosan

Water then flows into the bio-sand and activated carbon filtration compartment. Bio-sand filters remove 100% protozoa, over 90% fecal coliform, up to 91% arsenic, and 99% heavy metals. Activated carbon sourced from coconut shells ensures high porosity, large surface area, and renewability. This combination yields final turbidity levels of 0.13 to 0.2 NTU, well below the WHO guideline of <1 NTU. Compared to ultrafiltration systems starting at $2,999, ChitoClear’s filtration unit costs only $295.

Disinfection with
Chitosan/UV light

The final stage involves UV sterilization at 254 nm, inactivating 99.9% of pathogens, including E. coli and Mycobacterium. With a capacity of 500L/hour, ChitoClear delivers clean, safe water while ensuring long-term environmental sustainability.
